Collection: Maronia

Maronia is a village in Northern Greece, in the Rodopi region and is part of the administrative area Maronia-Sapes. It is located 34 km southeast of the district center Komotini and a few kilometers from the Aegean coast in the low mountain. At the end of the last century, 10 kilometers from the village, the only small fishing port was built, called by the locals "St. Charalambos".

The village is the heir to the famous ancient Thracian city of the tribe Ciconians, which emerged more than 3000 years ago, mentioned for the first time by Homer under the name Ismaros, and later by Pliny the Elder as the purely Thracian city Ortagure, ruled by the legendary Thracian King Maron, son of the god of wine and mysteries Dionysus.

The population of the village is 645 people according to data from 2001 year.
