Sapes (in Greek: Σάπες) is a small but historically significant town in northeastern Greece, located in the Rhodope region, part of the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region.  With its approximately 6,700 inhabitants (according to 2021 data)  , Sapes is the administrative and cultural center of the Maronia-Sapes municipality.

The town is located about 28 km west of Komotini, at an altitude of 96 m.  Sapes is strategically located on important transport arteries connecting Greece with Bulgaria and Turkey, making it an important trade and communication hub.

🏛 History and culture

The name Sapes derives from the ancient Thracian tribe Sapei, which was part of the larger Thracian kingdom.  In 55 BC, a Thracian kingdom of the same name was founded, known for its strategic importance and cultural heritage.
