Collection: Komotini

The city of Komotini is located in the northeastern part of Greece, in the Rodopi region, and is an administrative, cultural, and commercial center of the area.  It is located on the plain named Rodopi, between the rivers Bokloutza and Trelohimaros, at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains.  The city is known for its ethnic and religious diversity. Its population is around 66,000 people.

 

🏛 Cultural and historical landmarks

 

Byzantine Fortress: Located northwest of the central square, it was built in the 4th century by Emperor Theodosius and offers a panoramic view of the city.

 

Clock Tower: A symbol of the city, located in the central part.

 

Imaret: Remains of an Ottoman complex dating back to the late 14th century, which now functions as a church museum  .

 

Archaeological Museum: Located on Simeniou Street, the museum features exhibits from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period, including a golden bust of Emperor Septimius Severus  .

 

Museum of Romani Basketry: A unique museum dedicated to the traditional art of basketry, characteristic of the Romani community in the region  .

 

🌤 Climate and transport

 

Komotini has a temperate climate, typical for the Thrace region, with hot summers and mild winters.  The city is well connected to the rest of Greece and neighboring countries by bus and rail lines.  The nearest airports are in Alexandroupolis (65 km) and Kavala (80 km)  .
